By some estimates, there will be 10 million self-driving cars on the road by 2020. The technology isn’t quite there yet. The artificial intelligence (AI) that powers self-driving cars needs many more hours of practice before it can safely take to the roads in great numbers.

Politicians aren’t there yet either; they need to be convinced that self-driving cars are safe before they will make them legal to sell and “drive” on public roads.

But we’re almost there.

Google’s self-driving cars are clocking up the miles. Firms in China are developing autonomous cars. And the new Lexus comes with an autopilot feature that brings a flavor of robotic intelligence to the driving experience.

It has taken decades of research and some epic journeys to get us to this point. So, in tribute to the journeys and cars that have helped spur the development of self-driving cars, here’s a look back at 10 epic self-driving car trips for your enjoyment.
