Jeff Bezos Tests Giant $8M Method-2 Robot

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos got behind the joysticks of Method-2, a 13-foot-tall mechanical robot that appeared at Amazon's private MARS conference.

If there’s anyone who can afford the $8 million price of Method-2, a 13-foot-tall mechanical robot from Korean company Hankook Mirae Technology, it’s Amazon CEO and fifth richest person in the world Jeff Bezos.

Bezos got behind the joysticks of Method-2 at Amazon’s invitation-only conference known as MARS, which stands for Machine learning, home Automation, Robotics and Space exploration. In the video atop this page, you can watch Bezos moving the arms of Method-2 and saying, “Why do I feel so much like Sigourney Weaver,” referring to the suit she wore in the 1986 Aliens movie.

There’s a growing theory that the Method-2 is in fact an elaborate hoax. According to LiveScience, the original video of Method-2 stemmed from Facebook and Instagram pages of a designer whose website mentions a conceptual art project about a “fictional robotics corporation that develops its products in a not-so-distant future.”

At least Bezos helped prove that Method-2 exists. However, he didn’t make Method-2 move around, he simply controlled its arms. So people can certainly be skeptical about Method-2’s mobility. Method-2 even had support chains connected to its shoulders and the ceiling rafters to ensure it didn’t topple over.

The video below does show Method-2 taking some steps around Hankook’s laboratory, but is it real? Only time will tell as Hankook says Method-2 will be available for purchase later in 2017.

If Bezos doesn’t know about the speculation surrounding Method-2, let’s not tell him. He was having way too much fun testing it out. Then again, $8 million is a drop in the bucket for him.
