Teardown: Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum

A closer look inside the Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum that is set to take on the Roomba.


Xiaomi recently introduced its $250 Mi Robot Vacuum that hopes to take on the iRobot Roomba. The Mi Robot Vacuum can clean all floor types and features Laser Distance Sensor (LDS) and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) to scan its surroundings 1,800 times per second in 360 degrees.

It also has 12 sensors, including ultrasonic radar, cliff sensor, gyroscope and accelerometer, three processors and four CPU cores for real-time mapping and positioning, and a main brush with adjustable height for uneven surfaces.

The Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum features a Nidec brushless DC motor, claims to be ultra quiet, and uses a 5,200 mAh battery that promises 2.5 hours of cleaning. Like other Mi Ecosystem products, Mi Robot Vacuum pairs and integrates with the Mi Home app. It can be controlled remotely where users can remotely power it on or off, and it also lets you set regular cleaning schedules.

We’ve already compared Xiaomi to the Roomba and Dyson 360 Eye (read comparison here) and thought it’d be fun to take a closer look inside the Mi robot vacuum.

After removing the screws, do not uncover the back cover. First remove the main brush.

The auxiliary brush is can be uninstalled by removing one screw.

Remove the back cover.

Remove the battery. Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum features a 14.4v, 74.88Wh, 5200mAh Li-ion battery.

The batteries and wheels are modular in design, extremely easy to disassemble.

To learn more about the internal details, remove the protection plate and back plastic case.

After removing the protection plate and back plastic case, the front protective shell and LDS laser distance sensor can be removed.

The LDS laser distance sensor is fairly stable, which is one of the core parts of the sweeping robot.

After removing the protective shell, the internal structure is shown. We can see each solder joint arranged in order and in the same size.
