Toast-Buttering Robot Might Ruin Breakfast

Watch this DIY toast-buttering robot, which was built from junk motors, laser cut wood, and zip ties, try to finish making breakfast.


In today’s edition of awesome DIY robots we wish we had, William Osman built a robot that will butter toast for you. With a little refinement, Osman could be on to something here.

Someone actually reached out to Osman on Twitter asking him to build the toast-buttering robot. Apparently it’s a task some find too tedious to do themselves.

Osman, an engineer in California, details the entire project on his blog. But here’s the gist of how the toast-buttering robot works: a linear stepper motor moves the bread back and forth while a jigsaw motor holds the butter in place.

The toast-buttering robot’s frame, spikes, and mounts were laser-cut by Osman and are held together by zip ties. Both of the motors were older models viewers sent to Osman.

“I was planning on making a more cohesive user experience. But then I didn’t,” Osman writes. “The jigsaw trigger was wired to a 12v lead acid battery, and the stepper motor was driven by a motion control driver I built several years ago.”
